August 4-10, 1863

August 4, 1863 - The 1st Cavalry Division, I Corps, led by General John Buford encounters Confederate troops near Brandy Station, Virginia.

August 4, 1863 - Confederate crews from the CSS Chicora and Palmetto State approach Morris Island, Charleston Harbor and capture a Union picket near Vincent's Creek.

August 5, 1863 - Federal cavalry troops under General William Averell leave Winchester, Virginia and move to Franklin, West Virginia. The mission is to destroy former Confederate saltpeter and gunpowder works. West Virginia has been a state only since June 20th, 1863.

August 5, 1863 - The CSS Alabama takes the Union bark 'Sea Bride' off Cape Hope, South Africa. The 'Sea Bride' is sold to a British merchant.

August 6, 1863 - South Carolina Governor Milledge L. Bonham is urged to continue to support the defense of Charleston Harbor. President Jefferson Davis uses these words to describe the harbor: "which we pray will never be polluted by the footsteps of the lustful, relentless, inhuman foe."

August 6, 1863 - Federal gunboats are fired on as the USS Sagamon, Cohasset, and Commodore Barney move up the James River. 'Commodore Barney' is hit 30 times, once through the boilers, disabling the vessel.

August 8, 1863 - One result of the loss at Gettysburg is the resignation tendered by General Robert E. Lee. President Davis declines the offer.

August 10, 1863 - Frederick Douglas meets with President Lincoln and protests the inequality of pay between white and black soldiers.

August 10, 1863 - Admiral David G. Farragut reaches New York City aboard his flagship 'USS Hartford' and receives a hero's welcome.
